Hello parents of Governor Thomas Johnson High School physics and mathematics students!
Volunteer Opportunities:
I invite any parents that have an occupation dealing directly with our class' subject matter to contact me if they would be interested in becoming a guest speaker to our class.
Supplies Wish List:
We are always in need of tissues, pencils, rulers, and protractors. All are appreciated!
November Newsletter:
I cannot believe that we are already in the third month of school! We are entering a busy time of year with many holidays and in January there will be testing and exams. Since I have been on leave for almost four years now, this is a fictional newsletter. This website has been created for a graduate school assignment. I state this, so there is no confusion for anyone visiting this site.
This year I am teaching two sections of General Physics (Algebra based) and one section of Algebra 1. Physics is during Block 1 (7:30 - 9:00) and Block 2 (9:05 - 10:35). If you have any questions or any concerns that you would like to discuss with me, please feel free to contact me by email (mhb2(at)hood.edu) or call me at 240-236-83XX.
I can return calls during my planning period (10:45 am - 12:15 pm) and after school. Feel free to share my email address with your child, if they would like to contact me for assistance. I offer after school tutoring on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 3:15 pm. Please encourage your child to attend these sessions if you or they feel they would benefit from it.
In General Physics, we will be learning about velocity and acceleration in the next unit. Please check out the online resources listed on the Students page. There, you will find tutorials, homework help, free videos and more. I also post at least one practice problem related to our current unit.
In Algebra 1, we will be solving equations with one variable. You will find some helpful online Algebra resources on the Students page. Step by step explanations and word problems are shared.
In all of my classes, students can expect to have homework most weekdays and sometimes on the weekend. A homework schedule for the week is located at the top of the Students page. Homework not completed by the due date will not receive credit. Both science and math are the types of subjects that build on previous knowledge. Therefore, students should take the responsibility to ask questions when needed. If you feel your child is confused or needs extra help, please encourage them to speak with me. Final exams will be in January.
A graphing calculator is required for all of my classes. If there is a financial concern regarding the purchase of a calculator, please contact me. Calculators are used almost daily and will assist in physical applications simulations as well computational needs. Whenever possible, classes will visit the computer lab, where software and/or online resources will be used to learn new skills, practice those new skills, and sometimes create presentations to share with the class or online visitors. I will contact parents with directions on how to access these projects as they are created throughout the year.
Thank you for your support and let us keep the lines of communication open to best ensure your child gets all the support he/she needs!
